Combat Outpost Kherwar

Combat Outpost Kherwar(also spelled Kharwar) was a combat outpost of the U.S. Military, located in the Kharwar District in Logar Province of eastern Afghanistan, part of NATO's Regional East Command in Afghanistan . During Operation Enduring Freedom, saw use by the U.S. Army, Czech Armed Forces, and the Afghan National Army until the base was closed in 2012 after being deemed too hostile to continue operating.

History​

In 2009 COP Kherwar was built by Cherokee Troop of 3rd squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. The COP was named after the Kherwar District. It was built as a strategic point to be able to conduct combat missions within the Kherwar District with the support of FOB Shank.

During its operational lifespan, the outpost housed rotating elements of the United States Army and served as a base for combat patrols, key leader engagements, and reconstruction security missions.

Mission​

The primary mission of COP Kherwar included:

  • Conducting counterinsurgency operations
  • Supporting Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police forces
  • Maintaining security along key routes
  • Providing a forward operating location for coalition patrols

Casualties​

  • Spc. Nicholas P. Bernier of East Kingston, N.H died on June 25 2011 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, of injuries suffered June 22 2011 when insurgents attacked his unit using small-arms fire in Kherwar, Afghanistan. Assigned to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

  • Pfc. Neil I. Turner of Tacoma, Wash. died Jan. 11 at COP Kherwar, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. Assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

  • Pfc. Theodore M. Glende of Rochester, N.Y. died July 27, at Cop Kherwar, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by small-arms fire. Assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
